I grew up in a house where Christmas came with a list from each family member. The list was always full of "things I would get for myself if I had the time, energy, inclination, etc."
I've had friends and such razz me about that over the years, "it takes the (fun/mystery) right out of it", "it takes the meaning out of finding something the other person will love", etc.
I got exactly ONE bad gift in my first twenty years. It wasn't on my list, my sisters had gone in on it, and to this day, I still haven't read The Right Stuff…
