OK, so one of the guys who was in The Iron Wolves (and coincidentally was from Sacramento) in WWIIOL went off to the Marines.
He’s now stationed on Okinawa, but has spent a fair amount of time onboard ship, and here’s what he had to say
well, leave the dream on this float.
Went to Guam. Did nothing. Ran around and just got nailed by sim rounds a lot.
Went to (The Phillipines), pulled into Subic. Got called back. Mud slide. Go pick up dead bodies. The Tracks, we got to stay back. The grunts earned the medal, we just sat there.
We got to go on island for all of 24 min. It sucked.
Then we went to Iwo Jima – that was bad ass. A lot of good Marine Corps history, and it is a powerful place. Got to climb up the mountain, and you can see everything up there. It was very cool.
Now back at Okie for a few days, then off again to do gay ass training, it sucks, I’m on deployment and all we do is train this MEU is not even soc quail. We suck. But the Sgt. Maj for something said my Platoon is the best Platoon in the MEU, so that says something. Well yat yas I hope everything is good for you guys I’m just loving life, life on ship sucks so bad
To which another Former Marine Iron Wolf (from Detroit) replied…
!S Bird, good to hear from ya man.
Word of caution though, when embarked upon a naval vessel refrain from using the words “gay”, “ass”, and “training” in a string as you did.
Ahhh the smell of Inter-service Rivalry…what a beautiful thing. NOT.
Made me laugh out loud though.
