Letter to My 14-Year-Old Self

Dear 14-Year-Old Me:

Life sucks for you right now. Hell, you'll be entering high school and life will continue to suck — but don't worry, it gets better.

Believe it or not, this next decade of your life will be amazing.

For instance, you know those crushes you had in middle school? You'll do better. Much, much better. But for now, you'll have to deal with being awkward. In about two years, all of the wrestling you've been watching will pay off because you'll become the most confident guy that anyone will ever meet.  Sadly, you won't be the player you envisioned but you'll learn that's overrated. You'll fall in love — twice, even! And you'll have your heart broken several, several more times than that…but that's okay! You'll recover in due time. You'll date a lot more than expected and have a few casual girlfriends. Spoiler alert: none of them will work out and you'll still be left searching for a serious relationship — but it's all for the best! Let these things happen anyway!

You know how you've just become an uncle for the second time? Your nephew and niece will grow up faster than you think. Cherish your time with them. After all, it's because of them that you'll realize you want more in life. You'll learn that you love kids and want nothing more than to eventually become a daddy. Don't worry, you won't take the plunge just yet — but you'll be pretty damn close to ready by the time you hit your twenties, so prepare yourself.

Speaking of your twenties, you'll enjoy this time much more than high school. All of the drama that awaits you in high school will be irrelevant after four years. College will be a time of growth and maturity, and that'll serve you well as you enter the real world. See, in high school, you'll become a pompous, arrogant dick. Though you won't completely get over this, you'll do a much better job of being mindful of how you treat others. In time, it'll pay off because you'll become much more sociable and meet lots of interesting people.

The people you'll meet? They'll come and go. That's the cold truth. But, those who stick around will have your utmost loyalty. Sadly, you'll lose some friends along the way — even some that you'd never expect to cut loose. But that's okay. Treat others well and you'll sleep better at night.

This letter's getting a bit long in the tooth, so let's give you a few more things to smile about:

– You'll become an awesome radio DJ and host your own show for about four years.
– You'll attend several wrestling shows, including WrestleMania 29. This will inspire you to take stock of your life and pursue greatness.
– You'll attend the University of Delaware at the same time as a guy named Joe Flacco. He'll become a first-round pick and the Baltimore Ravens' starting QB, eventually winning a Super Bowl and giving you one of the happiest moments of your young life.
– You'll moonlight for the Baltimore Ravens digital media team in your spare time.
– You'll buy all of the things you've ever wanted as a kid. You'll never really grow up.
– You'll live a childhood dream and get involved in the wrestling business.

That's not nearly everything that'll happen over the next ten years. After all, why spoil a good surprise or two? Bottom line, you'll love your life in due time — you just need to stay the course and keep doing what you're doing. Sure, things aren't exactly peachy at 24, but I regret nothing that's happened over the years.

I am who I am — and I'm okay with that. You will be, too. You'll see.
