Alternately, just wait. Closed Beta was promised to the Founders by the end of March, so the launch version will be sometime this summer.
So far, it's been worth every penny, even though it's TRULY an alpha, complete with crashes, rollbacks, lost items, lost claims, etc.
The people who are in the Alpha are the people that want a voice in shaping the game (and SOE is ABSOLUTELY listening), and the people that want to get their hands on the tools as early as possible, to build stuff like this:

oh yeah…I've watched man streams on it for a while now…I want to play it…and tool around in an alpha and get started early on some designs and whatnot…only issue is it's a big chunk of money for me..lol Still trying to justify it for myself…perhaps if they had more info on the investment aspect where I can sell my designs later on…
I'd probably jump in if I had more time I could devote to it. Right now I'm so multi focused on different things that I barely have time for them, and dropping that much on something like that doesn't seem smart to me. Also, some of the rollbacks/lost stuff would really frustrate me.
The other thing that I'd have is not having any friends really in the system, as my close friends probably won't pay that much for an Alpha of a MMORPG, especially since none of us have ever really been interested in the genre. I'll wait for beta myself and hope to get lucky finding something cool.
