Tonight, I exited whatever Steam game I was playing and Steam saw fit to plunk a game that looked like it was right up my alley in front of me. That game is The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot – now in Open Beta from Ubisoft Montreal. The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot looks like it would be a terrifically fun game to play on the surface of it. You build castles in a land called Opulencia, and then stock your castle with loot and defenders. You raid other player’s castles to defeat their defenders and traps, and take their loot. The graphic style is chunky and reminds me a bit of Jack Black in Brutal Legend, and the game trailers certainly have a humor style that connected with me.
You can play one of 4 Archetypical Characters, Armored Meat, Archer, Mage, and the character that got me to install the game – The Runaway.
The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot Installation:
The game downloads and installs very quickly. I fired it up and found the opening credits and intro movie to be entertaining – only to find:
- The only Rogue-like Character,
- The only female hero,
- The only character that suits my personal play style…
…is Pay to Play – in an Open Beta – the game hasn’t even launched yet.
Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.
The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot Uninstallation:
Sorry, Ubisoft, you blew it BIG TIME. In choosing to make the only female character the only one that is also Pay to Play, you’ve alienated fully half of the gamers I know. In choosing to make the Rogueish character Pay to Play, you’ve alienated MORE than half the gamers I know. You’ve certainly alienated me in the process.
On the up-side, Ubisoft Toronto now holds the record for the fastest game I’ve ever uninstalled, if that can be considered to be any sort of up-side…
