Actually, I’ve always heard that the term global warming is misleading and that the trend leads, in fact, to more erratic weather patterns.

That is correct! It is a myth that Global Warming means heating up. Actually, things tend to get colder before they get warmer (on a global scale). But mainly, it just gets increasingly chaotic as nature get more and more messed up.
Well, my own layman’s understanding of Global Warming is that it’s ultimately an increase in the global *average* temperature – you know, mor akin to that thing that NASA Astrophysicists compute, not that thing that the NOAA Meteorologists compute…
I’m just thinking in “Southwest Central Kin-Tucky” it’ll certainly make it a harder sell… 🙂
