The Airport is *WINDY* today.
Like 36 MPH with 45MPH gusts…
From. The. West.
OK, have a look at DIA. Specifically the runway pattern.
Keep in mind that wind more than 29 MPH directly *across* a runway is outside the limit of what most carriers will allow their pilots to try to take off or land in.
36 MPH, from the west…means…that it’s 36-45 MPH *across* 4 of our runways.
Meaning we’re down to two usable runways for landings, and one usable runway for takeoffs.
The planes are backed up from the runway clear to C-Concourse.
Which, to give you some sense of perspective… If you switch to Satellite Mode, and zoom in, you’ll see 12 planes lined up for takeoff.
Double that, and you’ll get the idea.
On one of the 5 busiest days of the year.
WEWT.
I promise it’s not Frudian but the first thing I saw when looking at the layout was a swastika. X)
And you’re also right about the crosswinds. SHould keep most inbound traffic to a minimum (I’m sure the roads will be obnoxious though).
