Note: This is a personal blog, and the only use of any of this is for me to go, "huh, Cool." on the rare occasion I think to go look at any of this stuff and realize that (based on the analytics) about 3 people per month still care what the internal dimensions of a 10 year old MINI Cooper S Clubman are...

I might have to repost this on my blog.
Have to agree/disagree, I dislike people who call themselves geek, have no interest in anything geeky other than dressing up slutty or using it as a fashion.
To be fair though, i wouldnt call comics geeky either 😛
I love how her hair matches the colour of her wallpaper.
I disagree, people obviously don't understand that meme. Its suppose to be a girl who doesn't have an understanding of a game icon or something from a movie. IE. saying zelda is so great with a sword!!…. of course guys could make that mistake also tho.
The video is not about the meme but about a sexist rant a comic artist wrote about girls in geekdom.
+Liz Quilty – How can you tell the difference with just a passing encounter at a local convention or encounter in a Friendly Local Comic (or Game) Shop?
And it's pervasive. It's not just comics or games. It's the Motorcycle community. It's the 'backyard mechanic' community. It's the Maker community, it's the IT Community.
Everywhere I look in my own life, there's *SOMEONE* who's harboring the thought that "woman X" accomplished "accomplishment Y" through her looks moreso than her talent or skill at "role Z".
I know someone who is LOATHE to use voice comms when playing TF2. Why? Because she's at the top of the leaderboard for the match. Because the second she opens her mouth, the tone of the match goes from "That Engineer (or Medic) is fucking *amazing*. GO MAN GO!" to "OH, honey, here, let me show you how to play your class…"
And when she points out that she's already at the top of the leaderboard, and she could actually offer a few tips on getting there?
"What a fat, ugly bitch."
Or the Motorcycle instructor who, rather than offering one on one time for someone I know to learn to be comfortable on two wheels, suggested she "learn to be comfortable on the back of her dude's bike."
…she wants to learn to ride a dirt bike…
+Jonathon Barton you can't usually unless they open their mouth, which i think was the point. Equally i think there are men who do the same in any case.
The whole 'she must have got xxx or yyy because shes a women and has tits/vagina/whatever' is unrelated really to the comic post really, its pervasive everywhere. Equally i think men get this in traditionally female roles also , as well as being assumed as gay or similar because they choose a role outside the 'norm' for men.
+Michael Alexander Your comment is the **PERFECT** example of "Don't Judge a Book by It's Cover", and it's so fucking meta, it hurts.
Now, go ACTUALLY watch the video.
Point taken, +Liz Quilty. I know someone who gave up a full scholarship to his choice of several universities (Stanford was on the list) to become a ballet dancer.
His comment that I will always remember is "I just LOVE my job. LOVE IT. There are 87 women in this dance troupe. There are 7 men. 6 of them are gay."
Once his knees finally gave out at age 38, he went back to school and became a Biochemist.
+Jonathon Barton my 14yo son loves to do what is considered 'girl' things as well as guy things, and he is often is seen sitting playing shoot em up games whilst wearing a baby pink shirt. He says he's not gay in the least, and if women can wear pants and do IT or fix cars, , then he sure as hell can wear a pink shirt and do girly things if he wants without having to be gay 😀
I love the vid and I hate some of the "geeks" that are pushing women out of geekdom. I actually has ben quizzed by multiple guys on my geek knowledge because they couldn't believe that a woman could be into comics. I mean, really, who the fuck would pretend to be a geek? Also, there's a reason why my sister won't go to any comic book store or Game Stop by herself. Really, you geek guys, fix your shit up!
I had intelligent comments about this, but they've all been said already, so I'm just going to marvel at the sheer amount of PINK in that video. Holy wow. So much pink. I think I would slowly go mad in that room.
I like how the blanket statements about geeks need to be less judgemental get a pass because you know every geek (including myself) behaves in that way. Please.
+Alex White, not every geek is judgmental but many of the ones who are, are very vocal about it to the point where every woman geek, if they hung out enough in geek subculture, can count multiple times they've been judge for "pretending" to be a geek or are automatically assumed to only go to cons to meet male geeks and not because they actually like geeky things.
Also, did you miss the part of the video where a well known comic book artist called out many female cosplayers for "faking' being a geek? It now makes me regret liking Ex Machina and Starman.
I'm not directly citing the video. I've seen it before.
I'm speaking to comments about geeks in general that should be made to a specific subset of people.
I should have said comments, and not statements. The video though, isn't new to me, so isn't relevant to my initial comment. Sorry about that!
+Melissa Walsh i can't say i have ever been told im a pretender myself, though i generally dont do much if any self promotion like others probably do more (im not that confident i think,or maybe im just too confident in my skills?).
I have had customers email in wanting to talk to somebody technical please, and had to ignore their requests, and reply to their email with the information they asked, usually copy/pasting linux commands, output or information explaining their problem. Once they know i know what i am doing they are usually ok.
Only once have I ever had a person refuse point blank to deal with me because i was a girl, and that guy was an asshole with everyone not just me 😀
The fucking Catalina Wine Mixer.
I only quizzed one girl on "geekdom" and it was Star Wars. End result was, I knew stuff she didn't, and she knew stuff I didn't. But she daily proves to be a geek nonchalantly.
That post was.. cancerous..
I had to google 'The fucking Catalina Wine Mixer.' :/ i need to watch more movies 😛
