Hmmm… How to introduce someone to an RPG?

Val and I bought The World of Darkness and Vampire: Requiem back in December. I sold them on Amazon when I moved. (The New WoD sucks, BTW). I think the sheer *volume* of material there was rather intimidating.

Lately I’ve been digging back into my old Traveller habit, and enjoying the comparative simplicity in the rule system.
But there’s too much background, I think, to use it as a “starter” RPG…

Which is what led me to Risus. (http://www222.pair.com/sjohn/risus.htm)
VERY rules light, simple concepts.
We spent about a half hour last night with me refereeing her through the “introductory” solitaire adventure. (standard “Medieval Hobbit-Thief Gets The Girlfriend Kidnapped By stealing The Wrong Ring From The Wrong People” type adventure.)

Val came back with the “typical” questions an average joe might have:
“How do I win?”
“When do *you* get to play?”
etc.

Any suggestions on how to help her “get” it? 🙂

  1. A comparison to improve acting might help. Or cooperative storytelling.

“When do you get to play?” Two possible answers – when you have a group that feels comfortable rotating the GM, or that you get to play all the time, since you run all the npcs.
