I noticed something this weekend that has really redoubled my intent to get on, and stay on, a paleo diet.
Hunger.
Last weekend, I moved into a new place (can we have a moment of silence for the circumstances surrounding that? Yes? Thank you.), and I suppose you could say I ‘fell off the wagon’ this week. I had food from The Cookin’ Scotsman three breakfasts, The King of Do-Whop once, and I skipped once. I had five lunches. Two from The Cookin’ Scotsman, one from The Colonel, one from Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli, etc.
The kicker was breaking down and ordering pizza this week. HUGE mistake. Earlier in the week, I got pizza and wings from Papa John’s, and did OK with it. It stretched out over 3 days, and I wasn’t hungry. However – I’d been eating all that crap during the day all week…
Friday Night, I ordered the same pizza, under the belief that (like the one from Monday Night) it would feed me for the bulk of the weekend.
Hells no!
The whole thing (pizza AND wings) was GONE by noon on Saturday, and I was freakin’ STARVING.
I’m still not in a place where I’m all set up to do proper cooking in the new place, so I’m still depending just a bit on delivery food until payday on Friday. Last night, I made a deliberate decision to move back toward Grain Free/Paleo. I ordered Chinese. Beef with Broccoli, Cashew Chicken. No rice.
Guess who’s not hungry today, and has a big pile of leftovers in the fridge? 🙂
When I’m avoiding grains, I find that I’m less hungry to an *astonishing* level. Â A ‘losing 13 pounds in 3 weeks’ level of not hungry. And I’m not feeling like I’m missing out, either. I still eat out – but I’ll try to have a salad with chicken instead of a burger and fries. Taco Salad without the shell? Sign me up! I’ll have (as you’ve seen) Chinese instead of pizza. I still eat delicious food. It might be a little more expensive – but only a little.
2 boxes (and I could totally eat two boxes!) of Annie’s Organic Mac and Cheese is $5, plus the cost of the milk and butter.
A pound of 75% lean grass-fed ground beef from US Wellness Meats is about $6 per pound*. Locally, I can find 25 pounds of grass-fed burgers for $5.69 a pound. Local organic, non-grass fed is about the same price. Add in some veggies, and now you’re cookin with gas!
In other news, it’s a good thing that today is an Angry Birds Workout rest day, because holy crap, am I sore! =)
*depending on how much you get. If you bought 40 pounds at a whack, it’d be $5.70, if you bought only one pound, it’d be $13 and change…
