    HIPAA prevents your medical history from being shared outside the 'HIPAA-protected' silo, and in this case, it's not being shared outside that silo.

    Your doctor cannot release your medical history to your employer, wife, etc. without your consent. However, they do not need your consent to release your history to, say, your oncologist or surgeon – or pharmacy.
    Your pharmacy and your doctor can (and have to, for obvious billing reasons) release your information to your HMO.
    Your HMO can release your information to Intelliscript (who abides by HIPAA)

    When you apply for coverage, the company you're applying to can obtain your prescription history from Intelliscript because there's a spot on the application form where you authorize them to request your medical records.
