After looking at the enclosed graph in the article, I'm not so sure. IBM's prediction is based on analysis of current discussion…
I suspect that IBM has a decent chance of being right, and Steampunk will have a year of being "mainstream" pretty soon, then it'll go away forever, much like the Neo-Swing-Revival of the late 1990's did.
Meanwhile, the people who set the trend in motion (i.e. "All your friends") will ignite another round of judging people for not being "real" geeks who loved Steampunk "way" back in 2010…
I totally see steampunk getting more popular. It kind of already has.
Really, it's not too far from Post-apocalyptic and PA isn't far from Zombie-land, and zombies are freaking a rage right now.
And zombies were totally played out many years ago, so it is actually a resurgence, but even bigger this time. So, yeah. I see Steampunk getting much more popular.
