  1. Interesting idea though… My last two cars I have owned for 11 years each, only reason I switched then was because I was rear-ended and the car was totaled.

  2. I've had my current car for 5 years now. 
    The thought is to sock away each month a sum that's equivalent to what you can afford as a car payment. Then follow this cycle:

    Sell your current car.
    Put the money you saved this year with the money you got from the sale of your current car. 
    Buy a car that there aren't a zillion of on the road.
    Drive the car for <1 year while continuing to make your "car payment".
    Sell your current car (now a year older, with lots of maintenance receipts) for (almost) what you paid for it.
    Put the money you saved this year with the money you got from the sale of your current car. 
    Buy a car that there aren't a zillion of on the road….

    You get a nicer car every year, and – if you keep up on the routine maintenance and maybe spend a hundred bucks detailing it, you'll avoid the bulk of depreciation, most of the "increasing cost of maintenance" as a car ages, and ALL of the interest payments.
