Some interesting results have been published from research into the Psychology of Music this month.

Experiment One

Researchers from Université de Bretagne-Sud, France enlisted the assistance of a young "good looking" male volunteer. He was asked to approach 300 young women on the street, tell them he thought they were pretty and ask for their number. During 100 of the encounters he carried a guitar, another 100 times a gym bag and the other 100 times nothing at all.
Results Women gave their number to the young man 31 percent of the time when he was holding a guitar, but only 14 percent of the time when he was carrying nothing. When he was holding a gym bag, he got a number just 9 percent of the time._

Experiment Two

In an experiment, two identical facebook profiles were created. One was accompanied by a photo of a smiling young man holding a guitar; the second showed the same man without the guitar (Note: _the two photos are in the PDF linked). A friendship request was sent from each profile to 50 different women with the accompanying text: “Hey, what’s up? I like your photo.” Responses were categorized into positive (“I like yours too”) or negative (“I have a boyfriend” or no response). Twenty friendship  requests were sent every day for five consecutive days (so that the
facebook account will not be shut off). If a response was not received after a week, it was considered as a negative response. At the end of the study participants who responded positively received a letter of explanation._
Results While only five of the fifty women (10%) responded positively to the friendship request that was sent by the profile without a guitar, 14 of the 50 women (28%) responded positively to the friendship request that was sent by the profile with a guitar.

(Medical Xpress)—Two independent studies have found that women find men more attractive if they are holding a guitar. The first one, conducted by researchers in France was based on a young man asking strangers for a date—their results are outlined in an article they’ve had published in …

  1. I love psychology. And the neurology behind it.
I considered (briefly) going to school and working toward a PhD in Neuropsychology, but then I realized that I'd be in school full-time until I was in my mid-late 50's, I'd be $100,000 or more in debt, and a 'useful lifespan' on my career of only 5-10 years.
