+Audrey Lee and I have done a similar thing.
We've got Fluxx, Stoner Fluxx (LOL IT'S COLORADO FLUXX AMIRITE), and our latest big game purchase is the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, which we like a lot
http://geekdad.com/2013/09/pathfinder-adventure-card-game/

Back in the day, a Tabletop RPG was allegedly about telling cooperative stories and roleplaying, but what tabletop RPGs really were is distilled down to the premise of Steve Jackson Games' Munchkin
* Kick in the door.
* Kill the Monster.
* Take his stuff.

The +Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is soup, where Munchkin is a bouillon cube of a Tabletop RPG. The card game keeps in things like henchmen, and random monster encounters, but adds locations to explore and a Big Bad to defeat at the end of the session. There are adventures, and a campaign to play through that will last you and yours a goodly long time. It's an old school AD&D game, without the need for a DM to craft the world, then oversee the execution of the gameplay. You play the scenario, and then level up your character, get better items, etc – just like in the good old days!

It would be the perfect Tabletop RPG if Paizo would also release card sets based on the monsters and creatures and characters and whatnot found in their other publications, in addition to the pre-generated campaign that they're releasing on a monthly basis.

New Games Night
Getting away from Scrabble and Yahtzee…

Don't get me wrong. I actually like Scrabble and Yahtzee, but you can only play them so many times before you start to crave something different. As I mentioned in a previous post (https://plus.google.com/u/0/+JerryBowley/posts/KEFH2cvJBBo), I've been looking for a way to introduce my girlfriend to gaming with a flavor more akin to my old D&D days (without scaring her off completely).

Fortunately, the Interwebz came through for me in a big way. Thanks to suggestions from +Kyle Wudrich and +David Williams, and a little time spent watching +Wil Wheaton's TableTop, we are on our way to some new adventures!

Last night, we mustered up our courage and ventured forth into one of the scariest places I have been in a long time: A gamer store. It's called Revolution Games and looks like someone took the comic shop from Big Bang Theory and crammed it into a third of the space. There were wall-to-wall shelves absolutely packed with books, movies, boxed games, card games, and just about every kind of weird Sci-Fi or Fantasy memorabilia imaginable. At the back of the room there sat a group guys, huddled around a pile of tiles, figurines, and cards. Naturally, sensing fresh meat, they all turned and stared as my girlfriend and I stood as motionless as frightened rabbits just inside the door. Then one of them approached.

I'll cut the drama and let you know that, although the staff is quirkily excited about their store, they are actually very helpful and friendly. It only took 2 minutes for them to point out the games I had been looking for. Funny enough, they were all found on what they have dubbed the "Damn you, Wil Wheaton!" shelf, which is where they keep all games featured on TableTop. Pretty handy for newbies like me, when you think about it.

We only got around to playing two of the games last night, Pirate Fluxx and Forbidden Island… and both were a blast. Even my Sci-Fi/Fantasy-challenged girlfriend enjoyed them. They were both easy to pick up, although not so easy to win.

Pirate Fluxx was amusingly competitive, seeing us each win a couple of games. I think the biggest laughs came from the "Talk Like a Pirate" rule. She clearly didn't think I would keep it up as long as I did!

We only had time for one game if Forbidden Island, what with having to read the rules and set up the tiles, but it was also quite fun. I know my girlfriend was skeptical about enjoying a game where you cooperate, but she soon realized it was still competitive… we were just competing against the Island instead. It was tough, but I can proudly say that we won the game on our first try. Still, I can already see that winning won't be the norm when playing this game.

We'll give Pandemic a try later this weekend, and I'll let you know how that goes. Thanks again to everyone who steered us in the right direction. Oh, and +David Williams, I've already sourced out Castle Ravenloft and plan to purchase it as soon as I have my girl hooked on these.

  1. Have yet to play Pandemic, but it is on my list of things to pick up.  Have two kickstarter games coming hopefully before XMas (Scallywag and Euphoria)  Also have a copy of the FLUXX board game that we have yet to play.  Have 3 separate FLUXX decks, with the most recent being the Zombie that we've played.  I am part of their street team and purchased a surprise pack not too long ago and got a few more of their games that we are saving for a rainy day.  Can't wait for it to rain though.

    Love family game night.  – Bought a hexagon table recently to turn into a Catan table, can not wait to have time over the holidays to work on that.
