Note: This is a personal blog, and the only use of any of this is for me to go, "huh, Cool." on the rare occasion I think to go look at any of this stuff and realize that (based on the analytics) about 3 people per month still care what the internal dimensions of a 10 year old MINI Cooper S Clubman are...

It's a good thing we have mandatory sentencing guidelines for crimes committed with firearms.
Yes, that really deters… um… some of them, I'm sure. Maybe.
Crime really isn't the issue though. People aren't wanting gun control because of liquor store hold ups and bank jobs. They want gun control because easy access to guns for unstable people paves the way to massive carnage far easier than without the gun.
btw, i love shooting.
Can someone buy me a 1911?
My feeling is that a debate about reasonable gun control is not a bad thing to have.
The timing is always poor (immediately after some tragedy or another), based on emotional arguments rather than cold facts, statistics and the sort of distance from emotion that actuaries have when setting pricing for flood insurance, and would, in the end, not stop disturbed people from doing disturbed things. Like shooting a bunch of kids with a gun stolen from a legal, registered, trained owner…
It's also a backwards thinking argument.
Nowhere in the discussion have I heard it mentioned that by the time any sort of limitation on (whatever) about firearms comes to be passed, and ultimately expires, printing your own gun on a 3D printer will be *trivial* to accomplish.
Which circles back to the "…said no criminal, ever" line.
+Nolan L It's not 100% complete, but the basics are already here.

"I'd love to shoot somebody right now, but I won't because I can't get a gun" said lots of people who got over their momentary anger.
Trevor, I think your counterargument is a fair point to make.
I believe it also would be a fair argument to make for outlawing pistols.
They're easy to store, easy to handle, easy to maintain, easy to transport, and easy to aim in close quarters (the user manual for emotional killing is the Ezekiel scene from Pulp Fiction, really…), and easy to access wherever you're storing them.
So it totally makes sense that we're talking about banning high capacity magazines and assault rifles, right?
+Jonathon Barton I don't especially care whether and which guns are legal. What I want is for fewer people to get shot. Our current regime of easy-to-acquire assault weapons has not really accomplished that. If they're legal but really hard to acquire (legitimately or illicitly), so much the better.
Most civilians have no good reason for an M4 Carbine and other military-grade weapons or even extended clips, make those things nigh impossible for civvies to acquire.
Then I know some people with illegal weapons…
