The Royal Gorge, and my first official Tchotche.

Val and I went to the Royal Gorge today.
First, THE ALPACA LIPS!

Why, yes, it’s a long way down… (6MB MOV)
The Bikes… (23MB MOV)
We had the good fortune to be on the bridge as the Colorado Chapter of ABATE rode across…both times. I’ll spare you (and my bandwidth) the other one.
I was in the stable “kneeling position” that the USMC taught me to shoot a rifle with, and had the camera braced in both hands, with one elbow locked into one knee, and the other elbow locked into my side, and I was leaning against the railing, to boot. The motion in the camera is *NOT* the camera operator. It’s the friggin’ BRIDGE. No wonder I was motion sick by the time we got to the other side.
Valeri…er…Edith Ann!
If you’ve never seen a Buffalo being born, but always wanted to, this is your opportunity! (21MB MOV) The two babies that are already in the film were born Yesterday (5/6/06), and Last Monday (5/1/06), respectively. Lookit the size difference a week makes! The newest addition to the Herd came at 3:25pm MDT 5/7/06. It didn’t come out 100% on the camera, but it was *AMAZING* to watch in person…
Reach for the Sky!
Wow, that’s kinda far away!
Why, yes, it is a long way up there…
I told you!
All Squirrels Are Of The Devil Here’s irrefutable proof!
A beautiful end to a beautiful day!

And, I got my first-ever Tchotchke.

I couldn’t resist…

It’s a….

QUARTER – HORSE!!!!!

Bwaahhahahahahahahaha!!!!!

  1. “Quarter” horse. HAHAHAHA! It took me a while to actually get that.

And those pics of Royal Gorge actually make me anxious just looking at them. I’m not really afraid of hights, but they make me a tad nervous. And those pictures make butterflies flutter in my stomach.

    1. I’m only afraid of heights between the height where I KNOW I’ll get badly hurt (ladder/roof) and the height where I KNOW I’ll die.

I had no issues with the bridge whatsoever. Either I’d fall and skin my knee, or I’ll fall over the side, and have time to enjoy the ride…briefly. 🙂

        1. More like 8.5, if I’m calculating it properly.
about 5 to get from a standing start to the body’s terminal velocity of around 50 meters/second, and an additional 3 seconds at terminal velocity.

    2. By the way, there’s a movie I put up there where I walk up to the railing and look over with the camera. For a sense of scale, you can see railroad tracks down at the bottom, next to the river.

I actually had to go down there and stand next to them before I confirmed for myself that they’re standard 4’8.5″ gauge traintracks, and not some weird narrowgauge tourist railroad thing…

Now I understand why the Spaniards thought that the Grand Canyon wasn’t a big deal. When they got there in the late 1500’s, their notes show that the sheer scale of the place tricked them. They figured the river at the bottom (The Colorado) to be a “stream” only about 30′ across.

      1. I’ll have to watch that when I get home. I can’t watch it here at work. 🙁 I’ve never actually seen either of those amazing places. Some day I’ll actually get to see more of the world than Texas. *sigh*
